Moved house - again

Posted: Sun, 05 Sep 2010 13:53:42 GMT; Category: General;

Before I elaborate this topic I would like to mention that today (5th of September) it's been three years since I've been living in Ireland. Time flies and that was (and still is) very productive period in my life, so let's rise pint of Guinness for that.
Now, back to the main topic.

Moved house

Readers that visit my blog (according to analytics there are some) might be aware of that I moved house while ago. At the end of February, I moved in to Booterstown (from Sutton). I really liked the location and the apartment that I used to lived in. Very quiet area, near to DART line and shops. I was looking forward to stay there but I wasn't the one who triggered the series of events. My flat mate decided to move out and live on her own, and then, owners came up with the idea of selling the apartment. There is nothing left to say in that matter - I respect both decisions.

Before I started looking for new place, I decided that it is good opportunity to start living on my own - just rent place for myself and be independent. I knew that independence comes with the price but I got tired of sharing. If I knew that I will be living there only for six months I wouldn't have moved there; I don't like the relocations and probably no-one does.

This is the price you pay

Everyone living in Dublin is aware of the property market there. This is not the cheapest place to live even nowadays, despite the fact that prices dropped thanks to the property bubble. Everyone who is renting the place (or wants to rent) knows that looking for new place might be tricky. There are loads of offers, but not everything is suitable in terms of location and commuting. Some offers just look good online but viewing verifies the first impression. I realized that finding a decent place in a good location (also in terms of commuting) that costs less than EUR800 is difficult or maybe impossible. Of course, there are decent places to rent that cost less than that, but the are in the middle of nowhere. You have to pay for the commuting (public transport or car) and God only knows how long will it take.

Property Management Companies

Some of the offers are advertised by property management companies and dealing with them is not a good experience. They are Satan's little helpers and all I know that I should stay away from them. There were few properties that I was interested in, but majority of my enquires was ignored. There were cases that there was no response whatsoever despite the fact I rang few times, left voice messages and sent e-mails. If some owners struggle with finding new tenants, maybe they should handle the whole process on their own. I think it will make a difference.

Show me the money

When someone is going to rent a place some references are required - from your current landlord and workplace which is normal. What really surprised me, was the fact that the bank statement was also requested. When I asked the agent during one viewing about that bank statement, I heard back "we want to know that there is some money in your bank account". This is something that I can't accept and in my opinion this violation of privacy.

In my case I was also asked for the bank statement but I was told to "censor" it. It was all about the fact of having the bank account instead of showing the current balance of it.

You might be chosen or might be not

There is another problem when you deal with the agents that even if you are interested in the place and want to rent, it is possible that it will not happen. When I asked, what the whole process looks like I heard "we will pick someone". Thank you very much. The advantage of dealing with the owners personally is that they are really involved and first person interested in, usually gets the place.

The bottom line

It all sounds like a ranting but I thought that would be nice to share my experience. I think that property management companies are more interested in selling and managing properties rather than renting. They do this just because it is necessary evil.

In my case there was an agent involved but not associated with any of those companies (freelancer or owners' friend). The atmosphere was very friendly and professional. I've just moved in to Monkstown :)

The first rule of Fight Club is, you do not talk about Fight Club

Few days ago I stumbled upon Adam Sidwell's illustrations called "52 Bad Dudes". The collection features nice illustration of some really bad ass characters from the movies. Among those illustrations you can find Tyler Durden, Anton Chigurh and some others.

Adam sells them as a limited prints, so as a fan of the Fight Club I could not resist and I've bought this one:

Remaining limited prints are available here, but there are only few left.

Weekly Inspirantion #16

Posted: Wed, 18 Aug 2010 23:37:23 GMT; Category: General;

Another week passed so it's time for the next Weekly Inspiration post. This post I will start with the content of the website, bot with the website itself (which is simple and neat anyway).

Boarding Pass/Fail

If you have ever taken an air journey you received your boarding pass that tells you what is your flight number, departure gate etc. Usually reading that piece of paper is not the greatest user experience. Those boarding passes are difficult to read and cause confusion. I caught myself few times reading my pass few times. What is also interesting that the airport employees mark important facts with pens. After the journey all you want to do is just throw away this piece of paper - it's not worth to keep it as a memento of your journey.

No wonder that designer Tyler Thompson decided to publish his take on Delta Airlines. First of all you can see his rant which is somehow amusing, then some his and other people's ideas, how the boarding pass should look like. I have to say that presented concepts look creative; they are good looking and most importantly - user friendly. Personally, I prefer Tyler's last design (with huge text for gate number) and Davin Yoon's wallet sized pass.

midd.ag

Let's go back to the web design. Dutch agency midd.ag have nice and simple web site - simple and clean layout with originally looking header. Main navigation contains nice graphic solution when one of the items gets "selected state". Tag line underneath the navigation is related to the selected item. Such a shame that's an image - not an HTML text.

For me, the most interesting approach is the usage of the blackboard as part of the layout. It looks really well and features hand-written font face which doesn't look creepy. And it is not Comic Sans.

Hundred10

I stumbled upon that web site while ago but for some reason I decided to include it to this post. The web site itself is fairly simple and easy to navigate. No fancy fireworks with small exception for main navigation and animated content (hello jQuery).

What I really like are the infographics that describe the company, creation process and how much time is spent for each stage of creation.

HTML5 For Web Designers

Posted: Mon, 19 Jul 2010 20:38:12 GMT; Category: General;

Last week I received my copy of HTML5 for Web Designers written by Irish web developer Jeremy Keith. There is a some confusion going around the latest version of HTML and that book definitely helps clear it. The changes and new features are clearly explained and I can confirm the quote below:

In this brilliant and entertaining user’s guide, Jeremy Keith cuts to the chase, with crisp, clear, practical examples, and his patented twinkle and charm.

It is also good graphical experience done by Jason Santa Maria. Book costs $18 and is available on Book Apart.

Quote of the week ;)

As a fan of proper continental beer (and also non-continental Guinness) I couldn't stop laughing when I was told this:

- What sex in a canoe and Budweiser (the American one) have in common?
- Well, they're both f**king close to water!

Quick note on browser testing

Posted: Wed, 23 Jun 2010 19:46:19 GMT; Category: General;

I am not picky and mean person but I thought that this is worth mentioning.

I was browsing some web galleries where I stumbled upon one website from Poland. Colour palette for some reason looked for me interesting so I decided to check that website. When I opened the site I saw something that probably shouldn’t have happened: undefined, undefined in few places. It looks like font embedding technique failed. Worth mentioning is that I use Chrome as my default browser (on Mac).

It is clear that someone (or in general: the web design company) didn't do proper browser testing or deliberately removed Chrome from supported browsers. I checked the website in Firefox but there was no issue. Surprisingly, website looked fine in Safari, so it means that some differences may occur between Chrome and Safari despite the fact, that both browsers use same rendering engine (Webkit).

To fill me in, I checked the website on Windows (PC) to see what happens there. In Chrome - same result - undefined in few places, no such a thing in Firefox or IE8, but additionally IE8 threw in some JavaScript errors.

So what does it mean? Proper browser testing is a necessity. Specially nowadays, where IE and even Firefox loose popularity in favour of Chrome. I wouldn't be surprised if something similar happened in IE6 and that could be justified - IE6 is outdated, everyone hate it and wish it was dead. Ignoring modern browser looks just wrong to me.

Things I don’t like about my blog

Posted: Sun, 13 Jun 2010 22:25:35 GMT; Category: General;

It has been a year since I started posting post on my blog, but the design is slightly older. The last couple of months were very busy and productive for me and I learned a lot. I have improved my design and development skills focusing myself on the front-end development. I realized that blog needs some improvements.

In the new version of my blog I want to improve the following things. Please find my analysis and thoughts below.

Typography

It always can be better. In my Weekly Inspiration series I have collected few good and inspiring examples of nice typography. I also follow Aisle One and The Grid System and I am sure that I will find something simple and inspiring.

I already have made some improvements to the current version. I have adjusted the font size, line height and spacing between paragraphs and headings giving them more "space to breathe". Originally I used pixels as font measuring unit and changed recently to ems but I think that I will go back to pixels (not sure about that move yet).

Font embedding technique

This is nice area to play with some new interesting solutions. I've been using sIFR as a font embedding solution (Flash dependent) but I don't see the future for that. There are other solutions like Cufon, Typeface, Typkit, even Google have released their own solution. There is also @font-face originally proposed to CSS2 (improved in CSS3) and surprisingly supported by IE since version 5 [sic!]. So far I consider either @font-face or Google Font Api.

Headings

Current implementation of headings doesn't meet SEO guidelines. I used to use H1 heading as logo container (text replaced in CSS with logo) then H2 as section title and so on. How does the current structure look like? Here it is:

  • H1 - ffffrozen - Adam Bezulski's blog - text replaced with image using CSS
  • H2 - latest entries (or section title) / post title when viewed in details page
  • H3 - post title on the index page (or category/tag list page)
  • H4-H6 - rest of the headings

The problem with the current implementation is that SEO spiders (read Google spiders) will only look for H1 and H2 headings while rest of them will be ignored (still, the H1 is the most important).
What I have to do is push the elements one or two levels up and remove the logo from the H1 element (you can have only one H1 element on the page).

Post layouts

Changes are needed without a doubt and some of them are related to the new features that I want to bring in the version. My goal is to bring reduce the page height (and weight) and increase the number of information. The question is, how am I going to do that? Quite simple: I want to introduce "featured post" that shows selected amount of the text without comments) while "non-featured" will only display the titles.

Portfolio page

All I can say that the current layout looks neglected (shame for me!) maybe because I was more focused on the dedicated portfolio website (bezulski.com). But this is not an excuse anymore. Blog and portfolio website use the same database so I am able to do changes without a harm. Definitely I want to use bigger images and improve typography within that section as well.

Flickr

This is not going to be flickr badge anymore as it is now. It used to be flickr badge on my portfolio website but recently I have replaced it with the static content equipped with the carousel. I want to use the same approach in the new version.

Changes to backed?

I would say some additional functionality and improvements but not radical. Once I had thoughts about rewriting the project in ASP.NET MVC2 but I will not go that way. I spent too much time to develop the existing solution (n-tier architecture) and I think it is worth maintaining. I can see the advantage of using MVC2 platform and I will use it in my new projects.

Dun Laoghaire Harbour

Posted: Thu, 20 May 2010 22:04:38 GMT; Category: General;

Dun Laoghaire is a seaside town located at the south of County Dublin. It is a tourist attraction mostly because of the harbour and two piers. The town itself is also nice.

When I living in the north of the Dublin (Howth and Sutton) for some reason I never managed to get there (in fact I was facing south side from the apartment in Sutton). Once I moved to the south side of the Dublin I also changed the job and coincidentally, now I work in the office that is located just in front of the Dun Laoghaire harbour.

During one of the weekends I went to Dun Laoghaire and took some pictures with my Nikon D40.Dun Laoghaire

Now playing: How to Destroy Angels

Trent Reznor strikes back. Oh yeah! How to Destroy Angles is Trent's post-NIN project that involves his wife Mariqueen Maandig (what a hot chick).

The video for "The Space in Between" is quite freaking out but the song is really nice - dark, mysterious and industrial. Enjoy!

Easter break and some pictures

Posted: Mon, 19 Apr 2010 22:58:49 GMT; Category: General;

 I spent my Easter holidays in Poland and this time I had my D40 with me. Overall, weather was really nice and there was an opportunity to take some pictures. Together with my friend Chris (he has recently bought his Nikon D90 - really nice machine) went to the park in my home town, where we took some pictures before and during the dusk. The park in my home town is a really nice place to take some pictures - you can find there ponds, ruins of mausoleum and shelters. That was a nice session where we had tested the capabilities and some different settings of our cameras.

Ruins of a shelter. Brzeg Dolny, Poland

Pictures taken by me can be found on the dedicated photo-blog - ffffrozen.tumblr.com. I decided to establish separate blog, where I can post pictures and space is not restricted (I have almost reached the limit on my flickr account).

Chris also took some video with his D90 and edited video material will be posted soon.

New posts coming soon...

Soon I will be able to post something on my blog. I have  already changed hosting package so ffffrozen.com points to the new DNS now. I have to do sanity check for the admin area.

I decided to stay with Hosting 365 and I think that I made a mistake. The admin panel looks poor, on the current package remote connections using SQL Server Management Studio are not allowed and SQL Server applications are annoying. The previous H-Sphere panel is way much better. Next year, I will host with Blacknight.

Hosting change

Posted: Fri, 26 Mar 2010 11:30:46 GMT; Category: General;

I going to change my current hosting package so blog and portfolio will be down for a while until files are moved and DNS records are updated.

I have decided to stay with my current hosting company and just change my hosting plan that supports ASP.NET 3.5. My current package supports only version 2.0 and I could not add some features that offers latest version of the framework.

No posts for a while

Posted: Thu, 11 Mar 2010 14:12:16 GMT; Category: General;

It's been a while since I posted anything but there is a reason for that - no internet access. I have moved out from Sutton to the new place - Booterstown in County Dublin. I have already ordered the broadband and knwoing the reality it will take some time to make it up running.

I have things that I want to write about but I do not want to do that while I am at work.

BBC Online - design process explained

Posted: Fri, 19 Feb 2010 20:14:45 GMT; Category: General;

I think that BBC's website is the one that features good look'n'fell and user experience. Very interesting post about their "new global visual language for the BBC's digital services" was published on BBC's blog.

The stylegiude was co-created by English designer Neville Brody and his agency - Research Studios.
